While the UN climate climate is popping up, the Amazon forest of Brazil loses an area larger than NYC in May

Manaus, Brazil (AP) – The environmental goals of Brazil had a major setback in May as deforestation in the Amazon rose by 92% compared to the same month last year, according to official Friday released monitoring data.

Loss of forest reached 960 square kilometers (371 square miles) during the period, an area that is slightly larger than New York City. It was the second highest total for May, because the current monitoring system was implemented in 2016.

The increase threatens to reverse the fall of the year in the forest declaration since 2023, when Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva started his third term. During his campaign, the left -wing leader had promised to terminate the deforestation by 2030.

The Brazil monitoring system follows deforestation from 1 August to 30 July. In the past 10 months, deforestation has increased 9.7% compared to the same period a year earlier.

The deforestation percentage of 2025, followed by the National Institute for Space Research, is expected to be announced just before the UN climate discussions, planned for November in the Amazon City Belém.

Brazil is one of the world’s top 10 emitters of greenhouse gases, which contribute about 3% of global emissions, according to the non -profit Climate Watch. Almost half of those emissions come from deforestation, so that they can stop efforts to stop crucial importance to meet the Brazil under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The rider, an area almost twice as large as India, contains the world’s largest rainforest, about two -thirds of them in Brazil. It stores huge amounts of carbon dioxide, has around 20% of the freshwater in the world and is home of hundreds of native tribes, some live in seclusion and 16,000 known tree species.
